Educational trail to the Castle of Muráň
Route description
The Castle of Muráň is one of the most visited and best-known sites of the Muránska planina. The almost 360 m long and 96 m wide ruins of a once mighty castle still bear witness to a rich and dramatic history. This educational trail will lead you to places intertwined with history through the beautiful nature of the Muránska planina National Park.
The nature trail starts in the village of Muráň. Its first stop is located next to the Municipal Office and will provide you with introductory information about the nature trail route. From this point you can already see the Cigánka cliff (938 m above sea level), which rises above Muráň. At its peak, in the middle of the National Nature Reserve of the same name, are the ruins of Muráň Castle.
The route continues past the school to the edge of the forest, to the symbolic entrance gate of the nature trail and further along the forest trail, parallel to the red-marked hiking trail.
While climbing it, you will learn a lot about the natural beauties and attractions of the Muránska Planina National Park, as well as the history of the Muráň Castle, through 14 panels and 2 information points. The Cigánka rock cliff will provide you with an impressive view of the wide surroundings.
Safety precautions
In autumn and winter, the last section of the route before the castle gate may be icy, which is slightly dangerous due to the steepness of the terrain and requires attention.
Tips and advice
Not far from the Cottage under the Castle there is a well (spring) where you can replenish your water supplies.
Time planning: Due to the large elevation gain (555 meters), an athletic tourist must reserve at least 60 minutes for the ascent to the castle from the village of Muráň, while a less fit tourist must reserve approximately 90 minutes.
